Full of heart, laughs, and nostalgia, Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers is an entertaining family movie that will please a variety of audiences. To be honest, I was surprised that I enjoyed the film as much as I did. I’m a big Disney fan so naturally I always check out their new releases, but this movie did not initially stand out for me. I was familiar with the characters since I did watch reruns of the original 1989 Chip ‘n Dale show when I was child, but I had reservations that this “reboot” would be overly cheesy and poorly done. You’ll be happy to hear that I was wrong!
With an all star cast led by Andy Samberg as Dale and John Mulaney as Chip, the voice acting was expressive and full of emotion. They played the “buddy cop” theme really well as they constantly riffed off one another. I loved their energy and it really helped to give these characters life.

While this movie isn’t completely free of cheesy and almost cringe-worthy humour, it was still very funny and there were definitely scenes that made me laugh out loud. Some of the adult humour will fly right over your kid’s head, so there’ll be comedy suitable for both parent and child. What I would consider the highlight of this movie is how they really lean into the world of Disney and fully embrace its ridiculousness. The whole movie is chock full of cameos (not just from Disney!) that are fun to point out, and the mix of animated characters and live action had a certain charm to it that reminded me of Space Jam (1996).
There were definitely negatives though, most notably the plot – there’s nothing special about it. Everything that happens in this movie is very predictable and to the book. It was not very creative in this aspect so it really just focused on making you love the characters and the world that they lived in. For audiences unfamiliar with the titular duo Chip ‘n Dale, I can see this movie being a lot more confusing and overwhelming because a big part of the enjoyment that comes from watching this movie is the nostalgia.

All in all, my final rating for Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers is 6.5/10. While I was pleasantly surprised by this movie, it’s straightforward plot left me wanting something more. While the humour was very funny at times, it also felt hit-or-miss. That being said, it’s a great kid-friendly movie that can be enjoyed by many families, and its sweet and heartwarming message on friendship is enough to make anyone smile.
